EULAR Edgar Stene Wedstrijd 2007

De Europese Liga tegen Reuma organiseert voor 2007 opnieuw haar Edgar Stene wedstrijd. Deze wordt om de twee jaar uitgereikt door EULAR (European League Against Rheumatism) aan de auteur van het beste ingezonden essay. Het onderwerp van het essay wordt gekozen door de Social Leagues, de patiëntenafvaardiging binnen EULAR. Voor 2007 is het onderwerp van het essay: "The small things in life matter", "Ce sont les 'petites choses' qui comptent dans la vie" of "Es sind die 'Kleinigkeiten' im Leben, die wichtig sind".

De benaming van de prijs werd gekozen ter ere van wijlen Edgar Stene. Hij was een groot voorstander van samenwerking tussen artsen, patiënten en maatschappelijk werkers en leed zelf aan een ernstige vorm van spondylitis ankylosans, beter gekend als de ziekte van Bechterew.

De Edgar Stene Prijs bedraagt 2000 €, en de winnaar ontvangt van EULAR tevens een uitnodiging voor het jaarlijkse EULAR congres (juni 2007 in Barcelona) met volledige hotel accomodatie voor 4 nachten en toegang tot de openingsceremonie en het gala diner.

De EULAR Standing Commitee of Social Leagues zal een jury samenstellen van 5 personen, waarvan maximaal 2 artsen, die de ingezonden essays van de verschillende Europese landen zullen beoordelen.

Rules of the Edgar Stene Prize

Article 1 - Name and Aim
The designation chosen by the European League against Rheumatism (EULAR) "Edgar Stene Prize" is expressly approved by the Norwegian Social League (Norsk Revmatiker Forbund). The object of the prize is to stimulate the interest of the many people with rheumatic diseases in the work of EULAR and especially in the work of their national Social Leagues. It has been established in honor of the memory of the late Edgar Stene who himself had severe ankylosing spondylitis. He was a great promoter of co-operation between doctors, patients and community workers.

Article 2 - Nature of Entries
The prize will be awarded bi-annually to the best contribution submitted by a person with a rheumatic disorder describing his or her individual experience with living with this disease. Entries may cover such aspects as the patient's view of the way the disease is fought, social welfare, the influence of the disease on family life and work, etc.

Article 3 - Value and Awarding of the Prize
The value of the prize will be EURO 2000.-- and will be offered by EULAR. The prize will be awarded on the occasion of the Annual European Congress of Rheumatology; EULAR will cover hotel accommodation for 4 nights at the Congress venue and the travelling expenses.

Article 4 - Conditions of Entry
Entry is open to any person with a rheumatic disease. Employees of the national Social or Scientific League/Society are excluded. The Social Leagues, members of EULAR, shall announce the prize in their local journal. Entries are to be submitted to the national Social Leagues. The official language of the entries is English, French and German. Entries should not exceed 2 pages (typewritten). The best entry shall be forwarded by e-mail (or if necessary in 6 copies) to the EULAR Secretariat Seestrasse 240, CH – 8802 Kilchberg/Switzerland not later than 28 February 2007.

Article 5 - Composition of the Jury
The jury shall comprise five members, of whom not more than two shall be doctors, appointed by the EULAR Standing Committee of the Social Leagues. The EULAR Vice-President representing the Social Leagues and the Chairperson of the EULAR Standing Committee of the Social Leagues shall be ex-officio members of the jury. Both members have no voting rights. A jury shall be appointed for each prize and no member may sit more than twice in succession.

Article 6 - Awarding of the Prize
The Stene Prize shall be awarded by an absolute majority decision. If no entry is judged worthy of the prize then it shall not be awarded. The winning contribution and the other entries may be published after the presentation of the prize in whatever form the author, the national Social League or EULAR may decide.

No legal or other objection to the majority decision of the Jury is possible. Any discussions or correspondence concerning the finality of the said decision are excluded.
